By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter About 7.1 million people were suffering from atopy as of 2007, a 30 percent gain from five years ago, according to the National Health Insurance Corp. Monday. The number of those with atopy under nine years of age has increased dramatically, marking the highest prevalence of the disorder in any age bracket. The young are most vulnerable to the disease. Among those under nine years of age, 940,000 have rhinitis; 600,000 have atopic dermatitis; and 990,000, asthma; accounting for 21.2 percent, 53.4 percent and 41.5 percent of patients, respectively. ``Such disease are rampant among the elderly and children, who are sensitive to pollution and there are many pollutants in and outside the home. The government should look into how air quality and other factors are controlled at home,'' Shu Jang-min, a researcher of National Health Insurance Corp., said. Jeju, off the south coast of peninsular Korea, was considered the cleanest and healthiest part of the country and nicknamed ``Cheongjeong (clean and clear) place.'' However, it has the highest prevalence of rhinitis and dermatitis. ``It seems that environmental factors contribute to the prevalence,'' Chu added. bjs@koreatimes.co.kr
